What To Expect When Buying Your First Gun

Posted on

In many families and states across America buying a gun is almost like a rite of passage. Gun's are a major hobby for millions of people and even more use them as part of their self-defense plans should something go wrong in their home, so every year millions make the trip to their local gun store. If this is your first time visiting a gun store and aren't sure what you are going to find, relax, it is almost like any other transaction. Here are is a brief walkthrough of what you should expect when purchasing your first firearm.

What You Need

To buy any gun you will need a photo ID and to fill out a specific form that declares to the government that you are eligible to own a firearm. Most of the time this is processed quite quickly, and virtually all gun stores will have these files (an ATF 4473) on hand for you. In some states and counties there may be slight differences, but generally speaking, that's all the paperwork you need to be ready for. As long as you know you are legally allowed to own a firearm, it should be a pain-free experience.

Test It Out

A lot of gun stores actually have a firing range where you can test the weapon out for yourself before you buy it. It is crucial that you are not overawed by the moment and that you do test out the firearm if possible, as this will tell you a whole lot about it. You want to be able to handle it properly, but if it jerks too hard when you shoot it, or feels uncomfortable in your hands, then don't be dismayed, there are plenty of other weapons you can find that will feel better. If there is no firing range at the gun store, then visit one nearby and try out some guns you think would make a good first firearm before heading over to the gun shop to buy one.

Friendly Sales Associates

It might seem like a bit of an intimidating experience purchasing a firearm, but most people who work there are enthusiasts themselves and are happy to answer any questions you have. A lot of the time you will see the same regulars coming in and out of a gun store if you visit it often enough because it is like any other tight-knit community; it just happens to love guns. If you are confused, or need anything explained, don't hesitate to ask. As long as you are respectful and earnest, you won't find a problem at any gun store across America.
