Mistakes To Avoid On Your Fishing Trip In Puerto Rico

Posted on

There are several elite game fish to be found in Puerto Rico, including snook. First-timers on taking fishing trips could end up going home with nothing more than empty nets and a tan. Regardless of whether you are planning to freshwater or saltwater fish in Puerto Rico, there are mistakes you need to avoid:

Fishing with Bad Bait

Saltwater fishermen often like to use live bait, and with good reason. Fish love fresh bait and the right bait can guarantee a successful fishing trip. However, not everyone uses quality bait, which means a wasted day on the water.

You must remember that the saltwater fish you want essentially live with their food. Dropping limp and unhealthy bait into the water is not going to attract them. The bait needs to be responsive and not appear to be swollen.

Since this is your first time fishing, you might not know the right way to store the bait to keep them alive. Ideally, the bait should be left in the bank tank until you are ready to use them. It is imperative that you do not overfill the tank.

You also need to be careful about contaminating the water. If you are applying sunscreen or lotion to your hands, the water in the bait tank could become contaminated and kill the bait. Always wash the sunscreen from your hands before reaching in.

Booking a Half-Day Charter

A half-day charter might seem reasonable if you only want to be on the water for a few hours, but the shortened period could mean you go home with less fish. A half-day charter might not allow the captain and crew enough time to locate and navigate to an area where the fish are biting.

Ideally, you should plan for a full day on the water. If possible, a fishing trip that lasts a few days would be best. Not only would the captain have time to find and locate the best fishing spots, but you will get the full fishing experience.

It is important to note that a full day of fishing does not necessarily mean you will catch the fish you have your sights on. Being realistic about your catches will help you to enjoy the experience. Part of fishing trips that are often overlooked in the pursuit of the right fish is the excitement. Enjoy the time on the water and keep an open mind.
